Process for the preparation of polyalkoxylated aromatic compounds from aromatic compounds bearing at least one halogen atom and at least one hydroxyl group. More precisely, the invention is a process for the preparation of polyalkoxylated aromatic compounds, characterised in that the following stages are carried out: 1 - An aromatic compounds bearing at least one halogen atom and at least one hydroxyl group is reacted with an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal alcoholate in the presence of a catalyst which is copper and/or a copper compound and of a cocatalyst chosen from organic carbonates, mixed organometallic carbonates, carbon dioxide or compounds capable of forming carbon dioxide. 2 - The O-alkylation of the hydroxyl group(s) of the product obtained previously after alkoxylation is carried out by direct addition to the organic reaction mixture of an alkylating agent chosen from lower alkyl halides, dialkyl sulphates and dialkyl carbonates. The invention thus makes it possible to carry out the alkoxylation reaction and the O-alkylation reaction in succession.
