Process for treating streams contg. organic and/or inorganic impurities, comprises introducing the stream to be treated into a water-contg. reaction zone to which an electric current is applied via one or more electrodes, with simultaneous introduction of at least one material (1) which under the influence of the applied electric current forms radicals which react with the impurities. (I) is pref. a relatively cheap material which produces reactive radicals under the influence of electric current, and is esp. introduced in gaseous form. Suitable materials are e.g. Ch4, CO, H2, NH3, O2, air, ozone, H2O2, etc.
