The process comprises substituting for the drilling fluid, a nitrogen or natural gas stream initially at far higher pressure than the hydrostatic column pressure. The gas is circulated for 10-15 mins. at 2-3 fold less than the conventional flow rate. This reduces the pressure build up in the annular zone of the column and the packing, until the drilling fluid is re-applied instead of the gas.
