The coating device has a chamber 1 from which coating material, via a slot-shaped mouth 2, is supplied to a surface application chamber 4 delimited by the material web and a doctor blade 3. In the path of the material web, on that side of the surface application chamber 4 at which the material web enters into the latter, there is a restriction point 6 and 6', which is formed by a damming element 7,7' in such a way that a flow of excess coating material, issuing from the surface application chamber 4 via the restriction point, abruptly parts company from the material web and, at least to an overwhelming extent, flows away from the material web as film. To all intents and purposes, a supply of air, namely the air boundary layer, through the material web is thereby fully prevented. <IMAGE> |
