The "Steering system with a variable gear ratio depending on the linear speed" is represented in Figure 3 and works as follows: when the steering wheel 7 is turned, by means of the steering column 6, this turns the pinion 5, which engages with the rack 4 and moves it laterally, in turn causing the arms 1a and 1b to turn, which in turn move the steering tie rod laterally, finally turning the wheels. When the rack is very near to the joints 2a and 2b (low vehicle speed) the steering has a very low gear ratio and a small turn on the steering wheel causes a big turn of the wheels. When the rack is a long way from the joints 2a and 2b (high vehicle speed) the steering has a very high gear ratio and a big turn on the steering wheel causes a small turn of the wheels. <IMAGE>
