A cleaning and/or polishing roller, esp. for use in an overhead car wash, has flexible polishing elements attached to stiffer woven carrier elements which are in turn fixed to the roller. The polishing and/or carrier elements are a urethane impregnated polyester weave with a breaking load of 400-1000 N/5cm and a thickness of 0.8-5.0 mm. The roller is intended for clean or slightly dusty cars and is used dry or with very little cleaning fluid. The design of the polishing elements must be adapted to the carrier roller used in the car wash. Typically the polishing elements are 30 cm square and are attached to carrier elements 30cm x 15cm by means of 5cm wide, double sided Velcro (RTM) tape.
