The (alpha-numeric) display system has a field of grid elements (10) which can be activated to provide visual contrast and have common or closely spaced boundaries (12,12',14,14',16,16') whereby the ends of opposite non-intersecting boundaries (12,12';14,14') define two main directions (22,24) across the -ield. Each element has boundaries forming a six-sided figure whereby the said main directions (22,24) intersect at an angle between 70 and 110 deg. whilst the ends of the further opposite non-intersecting boundaries (16,16') define a third main direction (26) which intersects each direction (22,24) at an angle.
