Automatic windscreen-dimming control system for vehicle - uses liquid crystal screen-cavity with light sensors at screen edge

A vehicle windscreen (4) is formed from two outer layers of polarising glass with inner electrodes enclosing a layer of nematic liquid crystals. In the event of dazzle or bright sunlight the transmitted light is rapidly and automatically reduced by an electric field applied to electrodes (10) from a micro-processor and a linked array of light sensors (16) at the screen edge and set by a drivers manual control (14). Alternatively the darkened region can be confined to the drivers position (6), built into a rearwindow, driving-spectacles or the visor of a crash-helmet. ADVANTAGE - Could be used to convey see-ahead information to driver.
