Spark erosion machine includes an optical light measuring device which comprises a light source (10) of homogeneous parallel light beams and a sensor device (1) which detects the position of a feed wire (9) by its shadow (8) cast onto the sensor (1). The light is absorbed by the photoelectric sensor elements (2) and an evaluation circuit (14-16) produces an electric signal indicating the movement of the wire (9) from its correct position. This signal is then used to correct the relative movement between wire feed head and workpiece. The light absorbing surface of the sensor device (1) a rigidly, monotonously changing shape as a triangular shape. Pref. the surface has two groups (6,7) each having a certain number of sensor elements (2) perpendicular to the measuring direction (X) depending on the exact position along that direction (X). Each sensor element has a photoelectric transformer (11) whose signals are added together in a summation circuit (14,15). The transformer is pref. a photo diode.
