The invention relates to a rear axle of a motor vehicle. This axle comprises a cross member (1) pivotally mounted in relation to the body, about the imaginary axis located at the intersection of the longitudinal centre plane of the vehicle and the vertical plane passing through the axis of the rear wheels (6) or to the rear of this intersection, the cross member being connected to the body (2) by a flexible linkage system comprising two first flexible linkage devices (5) located to the front of the rear wheel axis and two second flexible linkage devices (7) located to the rear or on a level with the axis of the rear wheels, symmetrically in relation to the longitudinal centre plane of the vehicle. The axle is characterised in that each first flexible linkage device (5) comprises flexible means which are inserted between the body (2) and the cross member (1) and capable of endowing the linkage with a relatively high flexibility in the tangential direction in relation to the imaginary axis (3) and a low flexibility in the radial direction.
