PURPOSE:To inhibit dendrite growth so as to obtain e good performance secondary battery by covering a negative electrode with a thin film of ethylene- propylene copolymer rubber. CONSTITUTION:A negative electrode comprising a sodium alloy or a mixture of the sodium alloy, carboneous substance and a binding agent covered with ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber is used; i.e., the oxidation reduction potential of sodium is higher than that of lithium and therefore the reactivity of sodium to a battery solvent is milder and the reversibility of electrodes is good. Further, the use of the sodium alloy greatly restrains the reactivity of the electrode to a sodium solvent. Ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber is one kind of synthetic rubber and EPR, EPDM and the like can be mentioned as the rubber and EPDM is preferable. Thus the secondary battery has its energy density heightened, cycle life elongated and the rate of self-discharge lowered. |
