摘要 PURPOSE:To produce the carbon-fiber composite excellent in dimensional stability by impregnating the mat of carbon fibers having a specified bulk density with a specified amt. of thermoplastic resin, etc., and heat-treating the impregnated mat while reducing the pressure to appropriately increase the apparent volume. CONSTITUTION:The mat of carbon fibers having 0.001-0.3g/cm<3> bulk density is prepared. The carbon fiber is preferably made from pitch, formed by span bonding, melt blowing, centrifugal spinning, etc., and used as a continuous fiber or a short fiber of indefinite length. A mat is formed from the pitch fiber, infusibilized and carbonized to obtain the carbon-fiber mat. The mat is impregnated with the thermoplastic resin, thermosetting resin, pitch, etc., as the matrix, added, as required, with a filler, stabilizer, catalyst, etc., so that the content is controlled to 25-95%. The impregnated mat is heat-treated at a pressure lower than the impregnation pressure to increase the apparent volume >=1.2 times. The heat treatment can be performed in a gap or die. Consequently, a carbon-fiber composite uniform in bulk density and strength is obtained at a low cost.
