PURPOSE:To obtain a phenol derivative of a specified formula useful as an antioxidant by reducing a phenol derivative of a specified formula. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (wherein R1 and R2 are each lower alkyl; R3 is H or OH; R5 is an 11-21C saturated hydrocarbon group) (e.g. 4- octadecanoyl-2,3,6-trimethylphenol of formula II) is reduced to prepare a phenol derivative of formula III (wherein R1, R2, R3, and R5 are as aforementioned; R4 is H or OH) [e.g. 4-(1-hydroxy)octadecyl-2,3,6-trimethylphenol of formula IV]. For the reduction, a method usually employed for reducing a ketone can be utilized. The phenol derivative has excellent resistance to oxidation and is useful as an antioxidant. |
