PURPOSE: To determine the isotope compsn. of the element contained in a sample by allowing carrier gas containing no selected element to flow to a heating catalyst (Pt.Rh alloy of about 1200 deg.C) reactor and pyrolyzing the sample in the reactor. CONSTITUTION: Carrier gas containing no selected element is allowed to flow through a heating catalyst reactor 2 and the flow of the carrier gas is introduced into a sample before it enters the reactor 2 so that the sample is pyrolyzed within the reactor 2. All of C in the sample is converted to an element C precipitated within the reactor 2 and all of O in the sample is reacted with the element C to be substantially perfectly converted to CO and all of H and N in the sample are substantially perfectly converted to molecular H and molecular N. At least a part of the gas generated in the reactor 2 is transmitted to a mass analyser 4. On the basis of the measurement of the mass analyser performed with respect to CO, molecular N or molecular H, the isotope compsn. of at least one element selected from a group consisting of O, N and H in the sample is determined. |
