PURPOSE: To make it possible to obtain a liquid crystal cell having an optimum memory switching angle of high luminance by constituting liquid crystals of at least two kinds of liquid crystal components, at least one of which have inclined smectic layers, and chiral additives which individually or together induce spiral pitches of p<1μm. CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystals are composed of at least two kinds of the liquid crystal components, at least ne of which have the inclined smectic layers (for example, Sc), and one or more kinds of the chiral additives which individually or together induce the spiral pitches of p<1μm. The total mixture has a spon, taneous polarization rate of p>10nC/cm<2> and the final mixture includes an achiral smectic host mixture having Sc of an inclination angleΘ>10 deg.. If the liquid crystals are formed by using polarizers intersected orthogonally within an electric field of OV, the liquid crystals have dark parallel fringes indicating nonuniform structures. As a result, the liquid crystal cell having the high luminance and the optimum switching angle (45 deg.) is obtd.
