STEEL ROLLER AND ITS MANUFACTURE METHOD

PURPOSE: To discharge air between a roller surface and a web in motion by providing substantially spherical downward recesses most of which are overlapped on each other so as to form interconnected channels occupying at least 50% of the surface area of a roller. CONSTITUTION: A roller surface is blasted with steel shots so as to form on a roller surface 14 uneven textures 20 of the pattern provided with a large number of downward features 22 having sufficient roundness, and at least locally overlapped and substantially uniform depth and extremely sharp upward features 24. To form a smooth cylindrical part 30 on the roller surface, the blasted roller surface is ground to remove the sharp upward features without removing not less than 50% the pattern depth in a condition to surround the smooth cylindrical part by the interconnected channels to be obtained by the overlapped downward features.
