A planetary gearing arrangement for automotive transmissions includes a fourth simple planetary gear set (l6) and a fourth brake (86) added to the three simple planetary gear sets (l8,20,22), three brakes (68,72,74) and two clutches (64,66). In the fourth planetary gear set, the sun gear (76) is connected to the input shaft (l2) of the transmission (l0), the planet carrier (82) is connected to the fourth brake, and the ring gear (78) is connected to the planet carrier (30) and the ring gear (34) respectively of two of the other planetary gear sets. Thereby, nine forward-speed ranges and one reverse-speed range are obtainable with only single-transition shifts, and with the possibility of utilising small and evenly spaced ratio steps, and with a first forward ratio low enough to permit the use of the gearing arrangement without the need for a hydraulic (hydrodynamic) torque converter.
