Rotating actuating cylinder for machine tool spindle chuck - has piston rod axial motion transferred to switching bar which can be changed to re-program chuck

The actuating cylinder (1) is fastened to the end of the machine spindle and rotates with it. Moving axially within the cylinder is the piston and rod (2), one end of which (2') is attached to the drawbar of the chuck. The other end passes through the rear wall of the cylinder and carries on bearings (8,9) a fluid (air or oil) distributor (4) which enables fluid to be supplied through passages (12,13,18,19) to either side of the piston. The distributor is fixed rotationally but moves axially as one with the rotating piston rod (2). A bar (26) carrying switch trips (21) is supported in the bore (27) of a radial extension (33) of the distributor and locks into a bracket (17) which rides on the outer race of bearing (24) at the rear of the cylinder. When the piston rod moves axially, the switching bar (25) is held stationary and the micro-swtiches (20) are switched to control the chucking cycle as they move past the trips (21). A different chucking cycle is obtained by unlocking the switching bar and replacing it with a new one. USE/ADVANTAGE - Quick and accurate reprogramming of chucking cycle.
