<p>A process for preparing a nonflammable, linear, nongraphitic carbonaceous fiber having improved elongatability by heat treating a linear, stabilized polymeric precursor material fiber in a relaxed condition and without subjecting the fiber to tension or stress in an inert non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature above 525 °C to irreversibly heat set said fiber, and a linear carbonaceous fiber having improved elongatability of from 3 to 9 percent and a tenacity of from 2 to 7 g/d.</p> |
