PURPOSE: To safely process data at high speed without requiring the double conversion of signals by providing non-linear optical characteristics in a dielectric member. CONSTITUTION: A dielectric member 10, in which two optical modes can be propagated, is provided with input ports 11 and 12 and output ports 13 and 14 and the dielectric member 10 is surrounded by two electrodes 15 and 16. Then, the dielectric member 10 has non-linear characters essentially required for the function of an optical repeater. Therefore, when an optical signal is supplied through one of two input ports 11 and 12 such as the input port 11, for example, to the dielectric member 10 (two-mode area) and the light of high energy is supplied through the other input port 12 to the two-area mode continuously or at the pulse repetition speed of a signal supplied to the input port 11, a part of optical energy supplied through the input port 12 to the two-mode area 10 is coupled with the optical signal supplied through the input port 11 to the two-mode area 10 by the non-linear optical characters. Thus, data can be safely processed at high speed. |
