In prodn. of a bioactive and mechanically strong medical implant, comprising a base body of Ti or a medically acceptable Co-Cr-Mo alloy, and a coating of a highly bioactive or bio-compatible pure phosphate glass ceramic, the cleaned, pref. sand-blasted surface of the metal body is coated with a silicate layer of thickness less than 0.1 micron, followed by appln. of a bioactive glass ceramic, pref. of compsn. P2O5-Al2O3-CaO-Na2O-FeO/Fe2O3-F-(ZrO2)-(TiO2)-(MnO), as a fine suspension with grain size below 100 microns, and firm bonding to the metal body by sintering for 4-10 mins. The proportion of crystal phase in the sintered glass ceramic is then raised by heating at 500-600 deg. C for 3-10 h.
