A process is claimed for the prodn. of an absorbent textile sheet (I) by laying up the fibres in a pre-oriented fashion to form a mat and then compacting the mat with a jet of water; the novelty is that (a) the fibres are unboiled, unscoured, unwashed and unbleached cotton fibres, (b) the fibre mat is wetted with an aq. system before compaction, and boiled, scoured, washed and/or bleached after compaction. (I) is claimed, for the prodn. of adsorbent or absorbent medical and/or hygiene materials for absorbing liqs. and secretions, esp. medical compresses, and consisting of a fibre mat which is compacted by mechanical means only, using a water jet. More specifically aq. wetting system (II) lowers the surface tension of the water, and pref. contains detergent, esp. a non-foaming or low-foam detergent, pref. 0.1-10 (esp. pref. 0.5-5) g/l alkyl sulphate, alkyl sulphonate and/or a non-ionic detergent; (II) also contains a foam suppressant; fibre mat is wetted at (room temp.)-80, pref. (room temp.)-40 deg.C; the mat is placed between 2 carrier belts and wetted by passing (II) through the mat; fibre staple length is 5-45 (pref. 10-25) mm; the cotton is mixed with 5-55 (pref. 10-30) wt.% rayon staple fibre and/or synthetic fibre; water jet pressure is 20-150 (pref. 40-90) bar; the compacted mat is subjected to a further water jet treatment to produce a network structure; the compacted mat is produced in a first stage and then dried, and washed, boiled, scoured, and/or bleached in a later stage, or subjected to these processes after compaction; water absorption of (I) (single layer) is 250-1000 (pref. 500-800) g/m2; (I) has a network structure; (I) contains amts. of other fibres as above, pref. with not more than 10 wt.% synthetic fibre; (I) has wt./unit area = 20-60 (pref. 23-40) g/m2 and pref. consists of boiled or scoured and bleached cotton fibre.
