PURPOSE: To prepare a solid dosage form capable of releasing an active drug under controlled conditions after the lapse of a prescribed time by coating a core containing the active drug, a noncolloidal water-swellable excipient and a water-soluble excipient with a semipermeable membrane. CONSTITUTION: This solid dosage form is prepared by coating a core containing an active drug or a drug mixture, a noncollidal water-swellable excipient (e.g. alginic acid or a cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone) and at least one water-soluble excipient (e.g. inorganic and organic salts or an alkali metallic carbonate) together with an optional adjuvant with a semipermeable membrane capable of bursting as a result of a pressure applied with a swellable noncolloidal excipient after the passage of water in a peripheral humor, a simultaneously induced osmotic pressure and a gas pressure produced in the interior. The formulation is capable of quantitatively, instantenously or continuously releasing the drug independent of the pH of the environmental body fluid and/or the concentration of other ions and enzymes in the body fluid.
