A friction brake for a printer ink tape spool comprises a combination of a sprung wire (6) encircling at least 180 deg. of a channel (10) in a collar (3) on the spool (2) where the contact zone of the spring has an abrasive surface and the collar is made of a material (I) susceptible to mild abrasion by the spring surface. Pref. the spring surface is of steel roughened by phosphating, grit blasting, corrosion or plasma blasting or by embossing. Pref. (I) is a styrene-based polymer, pref. ABS, SB or PS. The collar may be integral with the spool.
