<p>A method for the production of a maleimide by dehydration and ring-closure of maleinamic acid obtained by the reaction of maleic anhydride with an amine. The method is characterised by effecting ring-closure imidation of the maleinamic acid by heating the maleinamic acid in a water-insoluble or water-immscible inert organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is a mixture of the amine salt and the acid, supported on a solid carrier.</p>
