In a sign system, in particular a road-name sign, comprising sign plate-holding members designed to be mounted alternatively on a house façade or in a projecting manner on a sign post 2, said sign plate- holding members comprise an extruded basic profile 24 which, on a rear side, has a longitudinal, central recess 34 and, on opposite long sides, has forwardly extending side edge parts 36 which, at a distance from the rear side and parallel thereto, have inwardly extending front side edge parts 28, which basic profile 24 is, within the front side edge parts 28, designed with longitudinal, hollow profile parts 30 which extend forwards from the rear side and parallel to the front side edge parts, and end parts 32 which are adapted to be fastened to the profile parts 30 on opposite short sides of the basic profile 24 by means of screws and which comprise inwardly extending front side edges which align with the front side edge parts 28 of the basic profile 24. In this way, a virtually universal sign system, in particular for use in road-name signs, is obtained by means of simple measures.
