The battery (450) is charged from a 12V supply (100) protected against polarity reversal and connected to a 5V supply (200) for a high-resoln. digitiser or analogue-frequency converter (600) and the microprocessor (700). Higher voltages are obtainable when required from a voltage converter (300) via a p-channel MOSFET current source (400) with min. losses. A discharge current sink (500) affords a self-test calibration facility with the satd. MOSFET in series with a reference resistance. ADVANTAGE - Trouble-free charging is possible without precise knowledge of battery type and capacity, or manual input of data of any kind.
