A clock generator (10) is permanently coupled to a supply (1) and is separate from a microprocessor controller (20) for producing clock pulses to the infrared transmitter (15) and reflection receiver (17). A first circuit device (Ts3) receives the clock pulses (T) and delivers, for each clock pulse, the supply voltage to the receiver (17). A second device (Ts6) is switched on to deliver the supply to the microprocessor at least when the receiver sends out the reflection signal. Pref. the second device (Ts6) is switched on for each clock pulse. Each device may be a FET. ADVANTAGE - Minimised power consumption.
