Headings G1D, G1K and G1M] A spherical or part spherical body 38 or 49 is located and retained in the conical outlet 24 of a vortex amplifier solely by the fluid flowing over the body which acts as a load for the amplifier. In Fig. 4 the amplifier is used as a proximity detector in a machine tool whereby movement of tool part 37, 39 into contact with the ball 38 increases pressure P c in tangential inlet 16 sufficiently to operate limit switch 40 through diaphragm 35. In a modification Fig. 5 (not shown) the ball is moved magnetically by permanent magnets (43) which are to be calibrated and which are temporarily attached to a movable body (41). In Fig. 6 the ball is moved by thermal expansion of a cylinder 38 so that the pressure P c is related to the temperature of liquid flowing through cylinder 38. Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates another thermometer in which the ball is contacted by a rod with either the rod or ball formed from a material having a high co-efficient of expansion. Fig. 8 shows a pair of amplifiers loaded by a member 49 which is arranged to move along axis A-A so that changes in acceleration produce variations in pressures P 1c , P 2c . This device can also be used as a rate gyro. |
