Vinylidene fluoride is produced from the catalytic, gas phase reaction of hydrogen fluoride and at least one halohydrocarbon of the formula CHnCXm wherein n and m are 2 or 3 and each X is independently selected from the group of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine, provided each X is not simultaneously fluorine. 1,1,1-Trifluoroethane, added to the vapor phase reaction mixture as a diluent, improves the performance of the fluorination catalyst, increasing selectivity for the desired product, vinylidene fluoride.
|
