This invention relates generally to a synthetic peptide, called LA-1, and to related peptides. The invention also relates to antibodies to such peptides and to labeled forms of these antibodies. Labels include cytotoxic agents and agents capable of providing a detectable signal. The invention includes the manufacture of such peptides and antibodies and their use as analytic and diagnostic tools. The invention has diagnostic prognostic value for identifying the carcinoma in situ (CIN) patients at high risk of developing invasive cervical cancer. The antibodies specifically stain typical cervical epithelium from patients with CIN I-III and the invasive cancers. The antibodies are highly specific and rarely react with normal cervical epithelium or other squamous cancers. |
