Ceric oxide contaning composition, its preparation and its uses.

The prepn. of a ceric oxide compsn. is claimed. At least one rare earth metallic oxide is added to ceric oxide having a surface area greater than 10 m2 per g. The claim relates also to the said compsn. and in its applications in catalysis. The CeO2 used can be obtd. by heating the hydroxide or an oxygenated salt in air at 400-1000 deg.C. A pref. prod. is obtd. by calcination of an aq. colloidal dispersion of a Ce(IV) cpd. at 400-450 deg.C; it has a surface area of 160-180 m2 perg. The metallic oxide (A) added is yttrium or any other lanthanide, in the form of the nitrate chloride sulphate or carbonate.
