A novel method is provided for preserving liposomes containing biologically active molecules, such that when rehydrated, liposome structures retain substantially all material originally encapsulated. A preserving agent having at least two nonosaccharide units is used either internally or externally or both. In a preferred embodiment, trehalose is used as a preserving agent, both inside the liposomes as an encapsulate material and externally, in solution, during freezedrying. The invention also includes a lyophilized composition prepared by the disclosed method. |
