Roller, especially for rolling mills and steel works

The roller has an axial boring which contains a stepped shaft, and is rigidly fixed to the centre section of the shaft. Hollow stub shafts are fitted on splines on the outer sections of the shaft and can move axially, their inner ends being connected to the roller body by a screw thread. These stub shafts can be rotated relative to the roller and so extended into splined holes in the centre of the inner races of bearings mounted in rolling mill frame. The stub shafts may alternatively be extended by a hydraulic system, and as a further alternative the stub shafts may be fitted in the mill frame instead of in the roller. An axial position adjusting device is also proposed. A drive motor may be incorporated into the roller. A system of rapidly exchanging rollers by providing several different roller pairs on a turntable is also claimed.
