The invention is based on overvoltage protection for the connection of data lines by means of a plug socket to a data network and for overvoltage protection of the associated data systems and equipment, the overvoltage protection having at least one coarse protection device. In order to achieve problem-free matching to respective special conditions, such as the type of protective circuitry etc. of the data system and/or the design of the plugs to be protected while maintaining correct suppression of overvoltages which endanger the data system, an arrangement is provided consisting of a lower base (1) and one or more associated upper bases (2). The lower base and the associated upper bases can be electrically and mechanically connected via an interface (7, 8), all the upper bases of an arrangement being capable of electrical and mechanical connection to the lower base of the arrangement at the interface. Furthermore, an overvoltage coarse protection device (6) is provided in the lower base, while the upper base or bases is or are provided with or without a fine overvoltage protection device which is matched to the electrical requirements of the data system or the like to be protected. <IMAGE>
