The invention relates to a boom brake comprising a pulley 4 for returning a rope 5, the pulley being associated with means for braking its movement along this rope and characterised in that these braking means consist, on at least one side of the pulley 4, of a respective group of members 19a to 19c, 27a to 27c for guiding the rope, preferably consisting of rings distributed over the opposing surfaces of two supports 17, 25 and mutually offset in the direction of passage of the rope 5 starting from a point close to the pulley, means 32, 34 such as a threaded rod with a crank being further provided to adjust the relative position of the two supports 17, 25 starting from a rest position in which the guide members are aligned in each group. Use on a sailing boat for controlling the displacements (swing) of its boom. <IMAGE>
