PURPOSE:To detect a stack fault of a channel, by collating a signal pattern which is extracted out of a specified channel of an outgoing highway with a signal pattern which is generated from a pattern generating means. CONSTITUTION:A pilot pattern generating circuit 201 produces a specified signal pattern and a signal pattern having a complement relation with said specified signal pattern alternately for each frame in the form the test patterns. A pilot pattern checking circuit 202 collates a signal pattern of the pilot channel on an outgoing highway 108 with a test pattern on a signal line 203. Then an error signal is fed to a signal line 110 when no coincidence is obtained from the above- mentioned collation.
