PURPOSE:To obtain a polyarylene sulfide having excellent heat stability and undergoing little viscosity change during melt extrusion by reacting S in a sulfur source with an alkali metal hydroxide and a polyhalide in a specified molar ratio. CONSTITUTION:A sulfur source (a) comprising an alkali sulfide, an alkali hydrosulfide an hydrogen sulfide and an alkali metal hydroxide (b) (e.g. sodium hydroxide) and a polyhalide (c) (e.g. p-dichlorobenzene) are reacted in such a molar ratio that the value of formula I is 0.995-1.05, and the value of formula II is 0.995-1.1 (wherein A is the total number of moles of the alkali metal in component (a) and the alkali metal in component (b), S is the number of moles of sulfur in component (a), and B is the number of moles of component (c)) to obtain a polyarylene sulfide (e.g. polyphenylene sulfide). |
