PURPOSE:To shorten the time for raising the temperature of a reforming catalyst layer in starting and to reduce the amount of drain produced by raising the temperature of a reforming catalyst to a specified temperature by supplying only methanol to a methanol reformer. CONSTITUTION:The temperature of a reforming catalyst layer is raised to a specified temperature of more than 65 deg.C (boiling point of methanol) in the temperature up step of a methanol reformer 1. Then, only methanol is supplied to the reformer 1 with a methanol supply pump. Gas produced by decomposition of methanol gas in the reforming catalyst layer is supplied to a burner 2 as fuel by bypassing a fuel cell 6. By burning the fuel, the temperature of the reforming catalyst layer is raised to a specified temperature higher than 200 deg.C enough to reform methanol gas containing water vapor. Since the boiling point of methanol is lower than that of water, the temperature of the reforming catalyst layer is raised in a short time to the temperature capable of reforming, and the amount of drain produced is also reduced. |
