A method and a device are described for the assembly of cable harnesses, in the case of which method cables are fastened to prepared plug housings by means of a positioning and handling device. The method according to the invention and the device according to the invention are distinguished by the combination of the following process steps: - the cables are prepared in an organised manner, as prefabricated leads, at a preparation location in such a manner that they can be gripped by a tool which is fitted to the positioning and handling device, - the plug housings are prepared successively in the work space of the positioning and handling device in such a manner that -- the tool is moved from the cable preparation location to the plug housing preparation location by means of a movement sequence which is repeated during the assembly of all the leads, -- the tool is positioned in front of the corresponding pole chamber by means of a one-dimensional relative displacement (in a fixed direction and of a magnitude which is in each case dependent on the contact to be fitted) between the tool and plug housings, and -- the fastening of the cable in the corresponding pole chamber of the respective plug housing is always carried out by the same tool movement. i
