For refilling a high-viscosity, pasty substance, in particular a hot adhesive or sealant, into an accumulator (12) of an apparatus for applying this substance to workpieces (14), in particular to body parts in automobile construction, the accumulator (12) is connected to a refilling device (16) and refilled only during breaks in work in which the substance is not being applied to a workpiece (14).
