A mode discriminating device which discriminates between a normal mode and a high-band mode RF video signal reproduced from the disc of a still video camera, comprises only one band pass filter 21 having a central frequency set in the high-band or normal mode carrier frequency band. The output of the filter is smoothed 22 and compared with a reference voltage. The reproduced output is also smoothed 13 and compared 14 with another reference voltage to thereby detect the presence of one of the high-band or normal mode carriers. The outputs of the comparators are ANDED 25 to provide the discriminating signal. If the reproduction level is too low and/or the noise level is too high, a mute signal is used in determining the discriminating signal so that an erroneous detection thereof is not carried out. <IMAGE>
