Polyamide and film comprising at least one monomolecular layer of a polyamide

A polyamide of the formula <IMAGE> in which Y is a divalent radical, X is a divalent radical having a chain of at least two carbon atoms, A and B, independently of one another, are H or C1-C26-alkyl, and n is an integer greater than 4, contains at least one C6-C16-alkyl group per recurring unit. X and/or Y contain at least one CH2 group in the chain. The polyamide is prepared by reacting a diamine of the formula NHA-X-NHB with approximately equimolar amounts of an activated derivative of a dicarboxylic acid COOH-Y-COOH. The polyamide is suitable for the preparation of ordered monomolecular LB films on a carrier. To this end, it is dissolved in a volatile, organic, water-immiscible solvent, the solution is spread on the water/air interface, and the layer is compressed after evaporation of the solvent and transferred onto a solid layer carrier by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique.
