PURPOSE:To obtain a large nonlinear optical constant by forming the above material of 50-90wt.% specific cholesteric liquid crystalline polypeptide and 1-50wt.% compd. exhibiting nonlinear optical response. CONSTITUTION:The above material is formed of 50-99wt.% cholesteric liquid crystalline polypeptide expressed by formula I and 1-50wt.% compd. exhibiting the nonlinear optical response. In formula I, R denotes the group selected from a group consisting of 1-30C alkyl group, cycloalkyl group, aryl group and arylalkyl group; (m) denotes 10<=m<=2,000; (n) is 1 or 2. The compd. exhibiting the nonlinear optical response is exemplified by a urine deriv., enone deriv., nitroaniline deriv., various kinds of heterocycle compds., stilbene deriv., and merocyanine.
