A stuffing box for sealing a shaft penetration against the passage of liquid has a packing consisting of one or more packing rings (40) which is clamped axially in a stuffing-box bore (30). The stuffing-box bore (30) has a larger diameter than the packing and, in the widened region created thereby, accommodates an annular sleeve (52) to which a pressure medium, preferably pressurised liquid, can be fed in order to exert a radial contact pressure on the packing.
