A method and a circuit arrangement are described for producing information which indicates the type of print head (18) which is fitted in a printer and contains at least one printing element (86, 88, 90). The actuator of the printing element (86, 88, 90) has an electrical resistance which is detected via an evaluation circuit. This resistance is assigned to one of a plurality of resistance zones which correspond to different types of print head. The evaluation circuit produces as the information a type signal (40a, 40b, 40c) as a function of the assignment made. The type signal (40a, 40b, 40c) is made available to a downstream controller which can supply the various types of printheads (17, 18) with the respective matched control signals. The invention can be used on virtually all types of printheads whose printing elements are operated via electrical or electromechanical actuators and in consequence have an electrical resistance. <IMAGE>
