A silane of formula Sin H2n+2[n =1 or 2 is prepd. from a Si-Mg alloy contg. at least one element selected from the gp. Li,Na, K, Ca, Ba, Ti, Zr, Nb, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Al, Sn, Pb, Bi, Se, S, and C as a third element, whose concn. is at least 0.2% on the g-atom basis of Si. The alloy is reacted with an acid in an ammonia solvent (pref. ammonium chloride or ammonium bromide), the ratio of Si2H6 to SiH4 being varied by the content of the third element.
