The present invention relates to the marking of components, especially when they are made of a hard material, using an optical device. A laser 8 emits a primary beam R1, R2 which is reflected by a spherical mirror 10 towards the component 6 to be marked on the surface 4 of which a line 2 is formed. The width of this line is very small because it is placed on an axis of convergence 14 passing through the centre 16 of the spherical surface of the mirror 10 and parallel to the primary beam. The invention applies especially to the etching of a reticule in an optical apparatus. <IMAGE>
