In thin-film magnetic heads, the magnetic guiding body is of sandwich construction and comprises a magnetic coil (9, 9') arranged between magnetic core halves (2, 2' and 4, 4'). The guiding body is of constant width (hs) up to a pole height (ds) and expands laterally as its distance from the pole tongues (6, 6') increases into a heart-shaped contour line with a predetermined core width (A) and core length (L). Geometrically speaking, the pole height (ds), the pole width (hs) and the flare angle ( alpha ) determine the sensitivity of the thin-film magnetic head. In order to obtain a high play-back voltage at favorable useful signal/noise ratio, the transition of the contour line of the magnetic core halves (4') in the region of the pole height (ds) has the shape of a continuous curve free of abrupt changes, preferably a circular section with a radius (r) at least 1.5 times the system height (hs). Thin-film magnetic heads of this type are particularly suitable as write/read heads in magnetic disk stores of high recording density.
