[Also in Division F1] A bearing assembly for a gas turbine engine, for example, comprises a bearing 12, Fig. 1, which is mounted in or formed integrally with a support member 15, the latter being spaced from a fixed structure 21 and having at least two plane surfaces which are at a substantial angle to each other and each of which is spaced from the structure 21 by a gap containing oil. In an embodiment, the support member 15 is provided with surfaces 22, 23, 26 and 27 which are parallel to each other and with surfaces 31 and 32 which are parallel to each other and at right angles to the surfaces 22, 23, 26 and 27. Thus gaps 24, 25, 28, 29, 33 and 34 are formed between said surfaces and the fixed structure 21 and these gaps are maintained full of oil by means not shown. The support member 15 may be supported from the fixed structure 21 by springs not shown. In use, when one of the surfaces is forced towards the fixed structure 21, a hydrodynamic squeeze film of oil is formed in the relative gap and this may be used to control the dynamic forces on a turbine rotor. In another embodiment, a support member 35, Fig. 3, has flanges 36, 37 which are respectively provided with surfaces 40, 41 which are parallel to each other and are horizontally -disposed; the flanges 36, 37 are also respectively provided with surfaces 42, 43 and 44, 45 which are parallel to each other and are vertically disposed. |
